Rattan without the tan. Most vintage rattan is honey or tiger-striped, and sits in a room as a feature. This one is a soft light beige that looks fresh, light and quiet against white walls, grey walls or a pale wooden floor. Put books and plants on it, and the shelf becomes part of the room.
The arch at the top is made of closely spaced ribs that curve over the dome like the ribs of a barrel. The sides are slim vertical rods with a crossed pair of bars in each panel. It’s a delicate structure, open from every angle, so light passes through it and a small room doesn’t feel boxed in.
At 149 cm it’s about eye level for most women, so the top shelf is within comfortable reach and you don’t need a stool. The shelves are woven in a tight herringbone, and the bindings at the joints are the same light beige as the frame, so it looks of a piece rather than assembled from parts.
It’s 59 cm wide but 40 cm deep, so it’s narrow across the front and generous front to back. It takes full-size books and baskets, and it asks for a little more floor than its slim look suggests. Measure the wall space before you buy.
Very good condition, with no damage.
