One piece that does four jobs. Put it by the front door and it’s a shoe rack. Beside the sofa it’s a side table, in front of it a low coffee table, and in the bedroom a bedside shelf. It’s the hallway piece that earns its place all week.
Richard Clack designed the Kantra for IKEA in 1999, and it was made in Sweden for only a few years. The bent birch plywood has the look of Alvar Aalto’s bentwood, with a curved top that rolls over at the ends, and shaped sides that flow into the legs. You can see why design collectors look for it. It was IKEA doing something out of the ordinary, and you can’t buy it new.
The clever part is the two lower shelves. Each one can be turned over to switch between a dished curve and a domed one, so you can set it up for what you’re storing. The dished side holds shoes and baskets in place, and the shelf has cut-out slots so grit and dust fall through.
At 67 cm wide, 41 cm deep and 51 cm high it takes up little floor. It fits a narrow hallway or the end of a bed, or sits flush against a wall with a lamp on top.
Being upfront: it’s nearly thirty years old and has some marks and scratches, as you’d expect. The structure is solid.
