A small table with a serious pedigree. Richard Hornby designed for Fyne Ladye Furniture of Banbury in the early 1960s, and his pieces were sold exclusively through Heals — one of the most influential and design-forward retailers in Britain at the time. If a piece carried his name, it had already passed a very high bar.
That neat clipped-corner top and the slim tapered legs are the quiet giveaway. Hornby's designs were known for restraint — no unnecessary flourish, just proportion and craftsmanship doing the talking. Fifty years on, it still looks like it was designed last year, not last century.
The top has been refinished with several coats of hard wax oil — smooth, protected, and glowing with a warm satin finish rather than a thick varnished shine. Done properly, the way solid wood deserves.
Small enough to tuck beside an armchair, use as a lamp table, or slot into a hallway where a full console won't fit. Understated, but the kind of piece people ask about once they know what to look for.
