Two chairs that disappear when you don't need them. Fold them flat, tuck them behind a door or down the side of a wardrobe, and pull them out when people come over. For anyone in a flat or a smaller house, that's the extra-seating problem solved without giving up a corner of the room.

Habitat in its prime is the point here. Terence Conran's shop brought good design to British homes at prices people could actually afford, and pieces from that era are properly collected now. This is exactly that sensibility — honest beech, woven cane, a gently curved back rail, and not one unnecessary detail.

The cane seats are in perfect condition on both chairs. Tight, even weave, no sagging, no broken strands — which matters, because the cane is always the first thing to go on chairs like these. Finding a pair with both seats intact is the hard part.

Being upfront: the beech frames show their age. Scuffs, marks, the general evidence of chairs that have been folded, carried and used for fifty years. Nothing wobbly, nothing structural — just honest wear. Leave them as they are and they look lived-in and right; sand and oil them and you'd have a nearly-new pair.

They look good enough to leave out, too. Around a small dining table, at a desk, or as occasional chairs in a bedroom — these aren't the kind of folding chairs you'd want to hide.
