A chest of drawers you can push around like a trolley. The four castors mean you can roll it out to clean behind, wheel it from landing to bedroom, or move it to the other wall when you rearrange the room, without a lift or a second pair of hands.
Austinsuite was an East London maker, founded by Herschel Lewis Austin and his three brothers. They worked in teak and afrormosia in the 1950s and 60s, to a clean, Scandinavian-influenced design. This piece shows it. The grain runs straight up the sides, the edges are softly rounded, and the sculpted wooden handles sit flush in each drawer front.
The four drawers graduate in depth, with the deepest at the bottom. The shallow ones at the top take socks, underwear and the small things. The deep one at the bottom takes jumpers and bulky knitwear.
At 69 cm wide, 43 cm deep and 84 cm high it’s a compact chest, with a hip-height top that suits a lamp and a mirror, or a plant and a tray. It fits a bedroom alcove, a landing or a hallway, where a full-width chest of drawers would be a squeeze.
The top has been refinished in hard wax oil, which protects the wood and lets the grain show through. Being upfront: there are a couple of small imperfections, shown in the last two photos. They’re the kind of marks a piece collects over sixty years, and they don’t affect how it works.
