The desk that doesn’t look like a desk. Four woven drawers, a glass top and a looping rattan gallery around the back and sides make it read as a proper piece of bedroom furniture, not a workstation. That’s why it works on a landing, in a bedroom or in the corner of a living room, as a dressing table or a place to answer emails.
Angraves started in Thurmaston, Leicester, in 1912, and ended up as the last cane and bamboo furniture maker in Britain before it closed for good in the early 2010s. It took over the designs of the old Dryad cane workshop along the way. The maker’s mark is still on this one.
The gallery rail has a job to do. It stops perfume bottles, jewellery dishes and your phone wandering off the back edge. The glass over the cane top means spilt makeup, drips and mug rings wipe straight off.
The four drawers measure 36 × 23 × 9.5 cm on the outside. They’re shallow, made for flat things: stationery, jewellery, makeup, chargers, the bits that otherwise end up across the top. They won’t take knitwear.
The kneehole is 32 cm wide, which is snug. It suits a slim stool or a small chair pushed in at an angle, but not a wide office chair. Measure your seat first.
Very good vintage condition.
